Why am I interested in the programme?

Through reading the BA (Hons) Photography course description, I strongly feel that the course is well structured for my career after graduation since I will be able to develop myself as a practitioner and independent thinker that will make me be organized and responsible for my work. Studying on this course fascinates me in that it enables me to learn photographic techniques as well as research methods and imaginative approaches to practice that are important sources of inspiration for my own image working.

My biggest interest is in the opportunities for undertaking live briefs with various companies and photographers. Since I have been using Nikon SLRs since I became interested in photography, this great opportunity attracts me a lot and motivates me for working enthusiastically.

I believe that learning photography on this course will give me a great chance to develop my own individual style and approach by interacting with a wide range of personalities through studying in your university.

Statement about my work

 My photographs here were put together without having a particular theme, although there is a connection between them; despite the fact that figures were drawn in my photographs, they are different from portraiture as the images were composed based on colour and do not place a disproportionate emphasis on figures or still life objects. They communicate harmony between figures and backgrounds with strong colour combinations and compositions that came together by chance. The thing I would like to communicate thorough my works are unexpected encounters and moments I have seen through my ordinary life since I value every moment captured by chance that I will never see again.

Boy feeder

This photograph conveys a contrast between the softness and the innocence of a little boy and the imposing street that surrounds him creating an inclosed feeling. The posts at the front frame the boy and add the depth to the image.

Tokyo street

This photograph was taken when I first went to Tokyo on my own. A subtle green cast was added to contrast with the red colour of the pedestrian signal. I was not aware of all the captivating colours  when I was taking this photograph, the colours came together by chance and creates an interesting feature in this photograph.

encounter - Tokyo -

The four figures in this image come together and tell a story. This image was taken in Tokyo last summer, waiting for a train at the station. It conveys a quick moment in time when each figure perfectly crosses into the frame of the camera, looking in different directions and going separate ways creating an interesting connection.  This was an important piece of my work as it helped me realise the pleasure of taking photographs spontaneously of people, which I had never found interesting before.

Paris alley

This photograph explores perspective, the eyes are drawn from the decay of the wall down the various lines of the alley way leading to the figures at the back of the image. The overwhelming buildings make people look small. Cold and warm colours are mixed effectively in one scene, and the red cast on the building gives the impression of dusk time.

Paris alley 2

This image shows strong colour contrasts between red, green and gray, communicating a mysterious world behind the image. Two thirds of the image is taken up by the chair and the area of the building in the foreground, then the figure in black leads into the alley.  The effect of shadow on the ground behind the movig figure and the light coming from the back of the alley adds to the mood of this image.

running after

This image conveys an unexpected moment. The original idea was just to focus on the black animal on the wall then the man moved into the shot, and the black animal  then looks like it is suddenly running away from the man trying to catch it. The blurring figures in the foreground also creates a more dynamic image and frames the animal successfully.

Christmas dinner

Colour combinations of green and red from various subjects even from the reflection on the glass bring this image together. Soft lights of the candles create the warm atmosphere which connect to the smile on the woman's face.

Christmas cooking

This photograph catures a moment of cooking combining strong food colour contrasts with figures without their faces in. A quick shaking of the packet in the woman's hands adds interesting movement to the image.

Hotel room in Paris

This photograph communicates the contrast between a picture in black and white from the television with the ambient colour of the room.  It was taken at the same height as the tv across the table, which adds atmosphere to the image. The eyes of the man on the tv, grabs your attention, leading the eye to the right side of the photograph. The colour gives an impression of quietness and a gloomy evening in Paris.

innocent soldier

This photograph conveys the safe distance between a little boy and a soldier. The little boy looks like he is holding hands with his father or mother whilst gazing at the soldier. In contrast to the innocent back of the boy, the soldier gives an almost opposite imposing impression.

China Town in London

This image expresses an inpatient little girl pulling hands of the woman whilst she is trying to talk to others. She has a curious expressions on her face,trying to get the woman's attention pulling her away. The attractive big letters on the signboards and the ducks hanging up in the window may be what they are chatting about.  

Brother

This photograph is looking at perspective with my brother in the foreground. The shape's of my brother connect to the lines and arrow on the road, the shape of his arms and legs are making lines that lead the eye towards the back of the image. In contrast to this, the figure is moving forward against the lines and the movement of the street, whilst his eyes are looking at a camera.
